PRECIOUS
Precious came in March 2005, a puppy farm discard, she was 16 months old. She had a litter of pups already , she is epileptic. She was shaved so closely that her ears were all scabby and bleeding. Her teeth were black like she had been eating dirt. She had really bad, stinking ear infections in both ears, she had permanent diarrhoea. We have discovered that she has a gut infestation of a waterborne parasite/worm. Whenever we think it has cleared, it comes back again. When I went to collect her she was very nervous but glad to be removed from her pen, leaving her room mate, a little Westie behind. She settled into a big blanket on the front seat on our drive home. Precious settled in very well, a gregarious girl with many puppy qualities, playful, outgoing, chews objects that she shouldn't and is a magpie, collecting anything that isn't tied down, mobile phones, TV remote controls , car keys, shoes, newspapers and toys. She either collects them in a heap on her bed or hides them in the garden. She is beginning to enjoy cuddles, although to start with she couldn't be touched, she went berserk when having her ears treated and couldn't be groomed at all. She was not house trained or lead trained . Lead training was attended to with short sessions and lots of sausage, she was very nervous and panicked very badly at first, toilet training is taking a little longer. After six weeks she had her first epileptic fit and the vet could not take blood for diagnostic purposes, as she was so afraid of being touched, so she had to have a general anaesthetic to do so. Gradually she is accepting more cuddles now and she tolerates her feet being massaged, but as yet she cannot be groomed thoroughly, just very short sessions with a soft brush. She has a long way to go before she can offer total trust. I am hopeful that due to her young age the time will come when she will forget her bad start in life. Update August 2005. As well as being epileptic, Precious has been fainting, It is suspected that she has a heart condition. She has had blood tests, Heart x-rays and ECG's but nothing can be seen. The vets say that 'She can go at any minute' This is a dreadful shock because she is so lively and naughty. We are just keeping our fingers crossed and considering more tests which may not show anything and I've been told that even if something can be seen that there may not be anything that they can do. |
